This prospective, randomized, open, blinded-end point evaluation (PROBE) trial is the largest clinical study to date of patients with both hypertension and coronary artery disease. It was designed to determine if a verapamil-based treatment strategy was equivalent to an atenolol-based treatment strategy for reducing all-cause mortality, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke in hypertensive patients with coronary artery disease.

In the Antihypertensive and Lipid-Lowering Treatment to Prevent Heart
Attack Trial, the treatment effects of a diuretic (chlorthalidone) were
compared to those of an ACE inhibitor (lisinopril), a CCB (amlodipine),
and an alpha-blocker (doxazosin) for the primary endpoint of combined
fatal coronary heart disease (CHD) and non-fatal myocardial infarction
(MI) in 42,418 high-risk hypertensive patients.

The Losartan Intervention For Endpoint Reduction in Hypertension Study demonstrated the benefit of losartan-based compared to atenolol-based therapy in preventing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. In pre-specified endpoint analyses conducted in a subgroup of patients with isolated systolic hypertension, a benefit was also demonstrated.

The Losartan Intervention For Endpoint Reduction in Hypertension Study demonstrated the benefit of losartan-based compared to atenolol-based antihypertensive therapy in preventing cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in high-risk older patients.
ARBs and Type 2 Diabetes Posted October 24, 2001
Recent clinical trials address the previously unanswered questions of whether ARBs delay the progression of nephropathy (RENAAL and IDNT) or reduce proteinuria (IRMA II) in type 2 diabetics.
IRMA II Posted October 10, 2001
The Irbesartan Microalbuminuria Type 2 Diabetes in Hypertensive Patients Study showed a renoprotective effect with irbesartan compared to placebo in type 2 diabetics with persistent microalbuminuria.
RENAAL Posted October 1, 2001
The Reduction of Endpoints in NIDDM With the Angiotensin II Antagonist Losartan Study demonstrated that losartan compared to placebo confers significant renal protection in patients with type 2 diabetes and nephropathy.
IDNT Posted October 1, 2001
In the Irbesartan in Diabetic Nephropathy Trial, irbesartan compared to amlodipine and placebo produced a significant delay in the progression of renal disease in type 2 diabetics with nephropathy.
